Best AI receptionist for law firms
For a small firm, the phone is the intake desk. A prospective client who reaches voicemail may simply call the next firm. An AI receptionist can answer every call, run the same intake questions every time and get urgent matters to an attorney. You still own the professional-responsibility side, so this guide covers both.
Prices checked October 27, 2026. Vendors change pricing without notice, and taxes, phone-number fees and add-ons aren't included. Confirm on the vendor's page before you sign up. Nothing here is legal or ethics advice.
The short answer
- Want a human safety net: Smith.ai AI Receptionist. Calls start with AI, and complex calls can go to a live North America-based receptionist. Native Clio integration, and a free plan to test on real calls.
- Busy firm that wants a fixed bill: NextPhone. $199/month flat with unlimited inbound calls. It lists Clio and MyCase integrations; CRM updates appear from the $299 Growth plan.
- Solo practice on a budget: Upfirst. Books into Clio and includes warm transfers on its $24.95 plan.
- Every call handled by a person: Ruby, a fully live receptionist service, from $250/month for 50 receptionist minutes.
These picks are based on each vendor's published plans and features. We haven't run hands-on test calls yet. See our methodology.
What legal callers need
- New matters. Practice area, basic facts, names of other parties for a conflict check, any deadline or court date, and how they found you.
- Existing clients. "I need to speak to my attorney." Take a message or transfer, by your rules.
- Courts, opposing counsel, vendors. Route or take a message.
- Urgent matters. An arrest, a protective order, a deadline this week. These should reach a person.
- Matters you don't handle. A polite decline, and a referral if you offer one.

What it costs
Intake calls run longer than a typical service call. Our math at list price, assuming a 6-minute average call and that every caller is a different person:
| Service | 60 calls / month (360 min) | 200 calls / month (1,200 min) |
|---|---|---|
| Upfirst | $59.95 (Premium) | $159.95 (Pro) |
| Goodcall | $79.00 (Starter) | $129.00 (Growth) |
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist | $105.00 (Free + 35 calls at $3.00) | $385.00 (Pro 150 + 50 calls at $2.30) |
| NextPhone | $199.00 (Pro) | $199.00 (Pro) |
| Ruby (live receptionists) | $1,725.00 (500 minutes) | Over 500 min: talk to sales |
Smith.ai's 150-call Pro price ($270) is derived from the $1.80/call rate it shows. Ruby's figure assumes its receptionist minutes match your call minutes. Ruby doesn't publish a rate for minutes beyond the plan. Per-call billing means long intake calls don't cost more, which helps firms. Run your own numbers in the cost estimator.
AI-only or AI with human backup?
AI-only services cost far less per call. The trade-off shows up with distressed or confused callers. Smith.ai's AI Receptionist routes every call to AI first, and can transfer complex calls to a live North America-based receptionist, day or night (Smith.ai pricing). Its AI pricing page doesn't spell out whether live-agent time is billed separately, so ask.
NextPhone says anyone who asks for a human is transferred to you or your team, or a message is taken if no one's available (NextPhone FAQ). That's a transfer to your own staff, not to an outside receptionist.
Ruby puts a live receptionist on every call and lists lead qualification and intake, scheduling and payment collection (Ruby pricing).

Visit Ruby ↗How to choose
- Decide how much human you need. If most callers are calm and transactional, AI-only is fine. If many are in crisis, consider Smith.ai's live backup or a fully live service.
- Check your intake fields. Make sure you can edit the questions by practice area and capture conflict-check names on every new-matter call.
- Confirm the integration. Ask whether intake data goes straight into Clio or MyCase, or only arrives by email.
- Set a no-legal-advice rule. Tell the receptionist plainly not to give legal advice or predict outcomes, and to say an attorney will follow up. Review transcripts in the first weeks.
- Ask about confidentiality. Where are recordings and transcripts stored, for how long, and who at the vendor can access them? Check your state bar's guidance on AI and third-party vendors.
- Handle recording consent. Some states require every party's consent to record. Make sure the greeting covers it.
- Test on real calls. Smith.ai's free plan covers 25 calls a month. NextPhone offers a 7-day trial, Upfirst 14 days.
FAQ
Can an AI receptionist do client intake? Yes. Smith.ai lists lead qualification and routing, and NextPhone lists custom intake questions and lead qualification. Upfirst says its law-firm setup screens calls, speeds up intake and qualifies leads (Upfirst pricing). You write the intake script.
Which AI receptionists work with Clio? Of the services we track, Smith.ai lists native Clio integration, Upfirst books appointments into Clio, and NextPhone lists Clio and MyCase (CRM updates from its Growth plan). Ruby, a live service, also lists a native Clio integration.
Is there a free option? Smith.ai's AI Receptionist has a free plan with 25 calls a month, then $3.00 per call.
Will it run conflict checks? The AI receptionist pages we checked don't list automated conflict checking. Smith.ai lists conflict checks as an add-on for its live receptionist service (Smith.ai receptionists pricing), which is a separate product we don't track. Capture the names and run the check yourself.
Do I need a human receptionist instead? Not necessarily. Many firms use AI for after-hours and overflow, with a rule to transfer urgent matters. Use the missed-call calculator with your average fee per matter to see what's at stake.
